Hello fellow readers and writers. It’s one week into May and it’s already been a rough-and-tumble springtime. I’ve lost two friends from my grade school, Eva Evans & Alex Toy, in the last two and a half weeks. It is sad to see these two bright lights go, and I am grateful to have gone to two services at our childhood church: Grace Church on Broadway. ⛪︎
We all went to school here as kids and so it’s sad to be back in this capacity but it’s the best possible place to say farewell to Eva and to Alex. It’s also one of the last places I saw my mom before she passed in 2008 and so it will always be spiritual to walk by Grace Church on Broadway.
They say the golden formula for comedy is tragedy plus time equals comedy and so I have one story for my mom’s passing that I found amusing. I’ll retell it here. A buddy named Will Chouraqui came out to my comedy show last month and I hadn’t seen him in a decade so he told me that when he came to my mom’s service at the Chelsea Hotel where she lived and passed away he felt like perhaps he’d been a little bit sheltered as a kid… we were 14 or 15 at the time. During the service we sang “Let it Be” and held hands and Will confessed that while singing he leaned over to our other friend, Aliza, and whispered to her: “Wow, this is a really good song. Did Sean’s mom write it?”
And so that’s just a small story that certainly got funnier over the 16 years since it happened. I’m working on some big picture jokes for my routine and hoping to get more personal and raw over time. Both my friends Eva Evans and Alex Toy were comedians in their own right; Eva through her web series “Club Rat” and Alex through his sketch comedy troupe “Fresh Out The Box”, and so I’ll continue to do comedy in their honor. ❤️ And also in my mom’s honor, whose favorite comedian was Oscar Wilde:
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
That’s a quote by the GOAT himself. Another good one is:
“I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.”
Anyways, I’ve got one show coming up. It’s at the Broadway Comedy Club on May 18th. If you haven’t got tickets already, you can find them here: Broadway Comedy Club Tix. Use promo code SEAN for $5 off. 🎭
I hope to see you there, dear reader! And if you can’t make it, just keep coming back. I’ll have more writing and shows and whatnot coming here, soon…
Life is short. My prayers and thoughts go out to the families of my two friends, Eva and Alex, gone too soon. I’ll see them in my mind’s eye every time I walk by Grace Church, along with my mom, Angela. Rest In Peace ❤️🩹 each of you.
